Introduction
You may download and view my resume here: RESUME 2023
I’m John, an instructional designer based in the state of Florida. I have a passion for creating motivating and engaging computer-based learning objects and experiences. At the beginning of my academic career, I earned an A.S. in audio production. Soon after, I completed my B.A. in English at USFSP during which I developed my penchant for research writing and collaborative learning. It was obvious to me that USFSP wouldn’t be my final stop; I had a desire to continue my education, so I searched for a graduate program that aligned with my strengths and interests. The M. Ed. in Instructional Technology program at USF was an exceptional choice. I enrolled at USF in the Fall of 2017 and completed my degree in 2018.
Although I had spent plenty of time with Adobe products, I gained mastery of their application and developed a variety of multi-media deliverables including infographics, job performance aids, storyboards, flowcharts, audio, video, and other media assets. In conjunction with my regular program of study, USF offered targeted electives that solidified my grasp of web design practices including HTML, CSS, JavaScript and instructional graphic design.
Throughout my coursework, I engaged with talented peer groups and learned evidence-based strategies to build websites, courses, and value-added educational deliverables. Several classes offered me a framework for inquiry through instructional design (ID) models, educational psychology, cognitive theories, and learning principles. I built on my previous success with academic writing and, with the support of my professors, investigated broad issues at the intersection of technology and society. Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) and citizenship in the digital age are just two of my areas of interest. My research experience enhanced my understanding of contemporary educational practices through a variety of disciplinary lenses.
My experience as an intern at Greenway Health provided me with valuable insight into instructional technology’s role and growing importance to organizations. Soon after graduation, I began a dynamic and rewarding position as a Multimedia and Instructional Designer at Scytl Innovating Democracy where I built award-winning elections training for U.S. and international clients. In my current role as Curriculum Designer at Hillsborough Community College, I create engaging and effective online courses for diverse learners and faculty. I have over 4 years of experience in instructional design, using Articulate Storyline, Adobe Creative Suite, and other tools to develop interactive and multimedia content.
The portfolio hosted on my site is a compilation of course artifacts aligned with the 5 AECT standards: content knowledge, content pedagogy, learning environments, professional knowledge and skills, and research. Each object is accompanied by a brief description that includes: the class and semester where the artifact was completed, nature of the artifact, the design/development process, and how the course artifact demonstrates the AECT standard target sub-standard. If you prefer to view a video guide to this portfolio, you may view one here. If you find this site helpful at all or have any questions, feel free to contact me through this site or on LinkedIn. I hope my work conveys the exciting possibilities and fun challenges that instructional designers encounter daily.
